However, a widely-reported £58m bid was deemed not good enough, with Napoli in a position to hold onto their prized asset having just sold Gonzalo Higuain to Juventus for around £75m.
After Koulibaly signed improved terms with the Serie A side, Chelsea decided to pursue Brazilian David Luiz instead. However, approaching the summer window manager Antonio Conte is still said to be very keen on Koulibaly and sees him as a long-term replacement for the ageing captain John Terry and a perfect addition to his squad.

“The player is very relaxed, I saw him after the [Real Madrid] game,” he said.
“At the moment, we don’t want to talk about his future but with a president like this who has a lot to say, it is difficult for us to affirm at a 100% that he will be staying at Napoli next season”.
“There will be a big game coming up in the Coppa Italia soon. He wants to finish the season on a high even if it will be almost impossible to surpass Juventus for the league title”.
Napoli host Juventus in the second leg of the Coppa Italia semi final next month currently trailing the league leaders 3-1 on aggregate.
